‘Newcastle United should be preparing for record-breaking January deals’

Newcastle United have been backed to prepare to make record-breaking deals in the January transfer window if they can avoid financial fair play and profit and sustainability restrictions.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson has slammed FFP and PSR for “governing football” and restricting teams from bridging the gap to the bigger clubs.

The club have been linked with a move for Dominic Calvert-Lewin as Eddie Howe wants to strengthen his attacking options after Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson have deal with injury-plagued seasons.

Football Insider also revealed that signing a new winger is a priority for the Magpies in January as the club aims to bolster the squad in a bid to challenge further up the Premier League table.

Newcastle United should be allowed to splash the cash

“They’re the richest club in the world, they can spend whatever they want,” Robinson told Football Insider.

“Wherever they are with their FFP and PSR plays a big part in that.

“I really don’t like it because the FFP and PSR is governing football, but actually how are going to close the gap on the teams that have been allowed to spend what they want for a number of years?

“We should be talking about Newcastle going into January having a massive window looking at these players, look at that, you know strengthening with world-class players.

“If they had the opportunity to go and spend that money in January and it was a player that Eddie Howe wanted and there’s a benefit for him, then I don’t see a reason that they wouldn’t go and spend.”
