Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon could land surprise new role for good – expert

Newcastle United ace Anthony Gordon has been “uncomfortable” playing as a centre-forward in his recent outings.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former West Ham and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie admitted that the 22-year-old has adapted to playing up top well, but insisted he prefers his typical position on the left wing.

Gordon has filled in during Callum Wilson’s and Alexander Isak’s injuries, with the pair expected back in May and late February respectively.

The former Everton star led the line in Newcastle’s recent 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest on Saturday (17 February) and bagged a penalty, but is yet to score in open play as a striker this season.

McAvennie suggested that Gordon will develop his game while playing up top but was eager to see him play out wide again.

“There has to be someone there who can play at centre-forward well,” he told Football Insider.

“Gordon has adapted to it quite well while there’s a few injured.

“He’s still scoring goals and he will learn a lot playing there.

“When he goes back to his normal position, from what I know and in my experience, he’ll know much more about the game.

“He could end up becoming a striker, but I don’t think so because he doesn’t look like he wants to lead the line – he looks uncomfortable there.

“He’s better running at people rather than having his back to goal.

“Gordon is more comfortable when he’s facing someone and running at players.

“But Eddie Howe would be pleased with him considering he has no one else to play there.”
