Newcastle United the ‘biggest in football’ as ‘huge’ Ashworth news confirmed – pundit

Dan Ashworth has taken on one of the “biggest jobs in football” as Newcastle United sporting director, according to Alan Hutton.

The former Scotland international, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 51-year-old has taken on a “huge” role following the Magpies’ takeover last year.

Newcastle confirmed on Monday (30 May) that Ashworth will join the club after agreeing a compensation fee with former employers Brighton.

His appointment is subject to Premier League approval,

Hutton admitted there is a “lot of pressure” on Ashworth’s shoulders at St James’ Park.

However, he insisted the former Brighton man appears the “right man for the job.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I think it is a big moment. It’s a huge job, if not one of the biggest in football at this moment in time.

“Not to put pressure on him but it really is because they’re going to go through such a big transition from where they are to where they want to be.

“It’s all about bringing in the right players at the right time, spending the right amount of money, not overspending and things like that. There’s a lot of pressure on him at this moment in time.

“But he’s had a real good career up to this moment. He’s made a lot of very good decisions, he knows a lot of people within the game.

“I think he is the right guy for the job. I really look forward to seeing how he moves forward with it. The money isn’t an issue but it’s about getting the right parts in at the right time.

“You can’t go too early and just spend millions and millions and make all these mistakes. It’s a big job but I think he’s up to it.”
