Newcastle United tipped to finalise Garang Kuol move amid work permit fears – expert

Newcastle United youngster Garang Kuol could thrive in Germany as the club looks to secure him a January loan move.

That is according to youth football expert John Wenham, who regularly attends Premier League 2 and other youth games up and down the country.

Kuol, 18, became the ninth-youngest player to feature at a World Cup when he came off the bench for Australia against France on 23 November.

The Central Coast Mariners star signed for Newcastle on 30 September but his move will only go through in January.

The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards reported on Tuesday (6 December) that the Magpies have been inundated with loan offers for Kuol with a move to Germany or Portugal most likely.

Wenham insists this could be equally, if not more beneficial, than Kuol spending time adapting to English football in the Under-23s.

“It depends where he goes, Belgium used to be the place to go for young players to cut their teeth,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Now it seems to be Germany. If Newcastle can secure this guy a loan to a club with a history of developing young players then that could be very beneficial.

“I still think he needs to adapt to English football but Kuol may not receive a work permit because he has barely played.

“He did get a few games at the World Cup but that might not be enough. So Newcastle might not have a choice but that’s not the end of the world if there are clubs abroad who are willing to take him.”

Kuol has scored twice and assisted twice in four A-League appearances this season.

Despite his Australia call-up, the striker is yet to start in the league for his club side.
