Newcastle United to replace Eddie Howe with ‘big-name manager’ – pundit
Newcastle United will replace Eddie Howe with a “big-name” manager – but he deserves to stay.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former West Ham United and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie admitted Howe has exceeded his expectations at St James’ Park and has “galvanised” the city.
The former Bournemouth boss has had a successful spell on Tyneside having qualified for the Champions League last season, but a recent drop in form has seen them slip down the table.
The Magpies have reportedly scouted other managers to replace Howe, including Girona’s Michel Sanchez, with many expecting the board to recruit a new long-term boss.
Eddie Howe to be forced out of Newcastle in shock manager twist
However, McAvennie insists that Howe is more than capable of fulfilling the board’s high expectations and believes he has the team playing “amazing” football.
“They brought Howe in until they get a big-name manager, which they will,” he told Football Insider.
“But big names don’t always do what Eddie’s done.
“He’s galvanised the whole city – it’s unbelievable.
“Newcastle fans all just wanted Mike Ashley and his whole regime out.
“Howe’s come in since and done a far better job than what I thought he’d do.
“He’s bought players, like Anthony Gordon and those boys, for £40million or so – that’s nothing in today’s football.
“They’re worth fortunes if they were to be sold now.
“I think Eddie deserves to stay on and take them to the next stage.
“The football they’re playing is amazing to watch and that’s what Newcastle fans want.

“The Geordies will be happy as long as the players and manager put in 110 per cent.
“Eddie knows that and he will get a tune out of the team – that’s for sure.”
