Exclusive: Huge Newcastle update, pundit claims ‘big-name’ signings to flock to the club

Noel Whelan claims that former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino would attract “big-name” signings to Newcastle United if appointed manager.

The ex-Leeds and Middlesbrough forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes the Argentine would be able to build a “very good” squad at St James’ Park.

As revealed by Football Insider, Newcastle’s prospective new owners have identified Pochettino as their number one choice as manager if the takeover is successful.

It is understood Pochettino is keen on holding talks over a potential move to St James’ Park and hearing what the board’s plans are moving forward, with initial discussions likely to take place next month.

Whelan believes that the former Spurs man will be in high demand across Europe and that players would be attracted to joining Newcastle if he were to take charge.

Whelan told Football Insider: “He’s a name that would fit the bill for most clubs, Premier League or top-flight European clubs.

“He’s a manager that’s done fantastically well wherever he’s been, he’s got great man-management skills, tactically very good and I’m sure he would assemble a very good squad and attract big-name players to the club because of him.

“They would know he would make them a better player in the long term and he would only go to a club that’s going to be competitive and fighting for things.”

Pochettino left Tottenham back in November despite taking the club to the Champions League final last season.

Current Newcastle boss Steve Bruce has been in charge since replacing Rafael Benitez last summer.

In other Newcastle United news, it can be REVEALED that the club are ready to blow Tottenham out of the water to sign attacking star.
