Newcastle United will sign four players before the January window closes in stunning spree – pundit

Newcastle United will sign up to four starting-quality players in the January transfer window.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former West Ham and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie insisted that the Magpies “can afford” to recruit heavily and must if they want to challenge for Champions League qualification.

The club have reportedly spent a monumental £515million since 2019 on pre-takeover signings including Allan Saint-Maximin and Joelinton as well as PiF-funded additions such as Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali.

While Financial Fair Play will certainly impact the extent of their spending this month, PiF are the richest football club owners in the world with a reported wealth of around £360billion.

McAvennie has predicted huge changes to the face of the starting line-up by the end of the month despite the inflated fees in January deals.

“Newcastle have not got a very good squad,” he told Football Insider.

“I think they will go out and buy three or four quality starting players in January – they can afford it!

“In January, the prices do go up, but I would not be surprised if they bring in three or four players.

“If they’ve got any aspirations to keep fighting for the Champions League places, they have to.

“They gave their Champions League group a right good go and they should have gone through but didn’t because of that dodgy penalty against Paris Sanit-Germain.

“But you have to kick on from that and they can’t just sit back.”
