Newcastle United will sign ‘three superstars’ after mass exodus – pundit

Newcastle United will sanction a swathe of player sales to make way for “three superstar” signings this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former West Ham United and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie was adamant that the Magpies will look to offload fringe players, including Matt Ritchie, in their efforts to fill their squad with quality.

Despite the riches of owners PiF, Eddie Howes’ side were hamstrung in the January transfer window due to their FFP obligations and made no additions.

However, they are expected to make moves in the off-season for big-name stars, with Football Insider revealing (17 February) that they and Aston Villa are keen on Arsenal’s Emile Smith Rowe.

Newcastle United need a major squad clearout so they can sign “quality” new players, according to Frank McAvennie

Well-placed sources also told Football Insider (5 February) that they are very keen on a summer deal for Everton midfield star Amadou Onana.

McAvennie claimed that Newcastle will have to be ruthless and sell up to five stars who have “fought for the jersey”, but insisted it is vital to help the club develop.

“I think they’re going to get rid of a lot of players,” he told Football Insider.

“There’s a lot of players at Newcastle who bust a gut and have fought for the jersey.

“But there are players who come in and make the game easier – and Newcastle need some quality players.

“To get these in, they need to offload a few.

“Some players, like Matt Ritchie, I don’t think they’ll be around – they’ll be surplus to requirements.

“Even if they bring in two or three superstar players, which I think is going to happen, they’ll have to get rid of four or five players to justify the wages.”
