Newcastle waiting on Man City update before selling star players – sources
Newcastle United are likely waiting on the outcome of Manchester City’s associated party transactions (APT) case before deciding if they need to make any big sales this season, sources have told Football Insider.
Man City have taken legal action against the Premier League regarding the APT rules currently in place, with the club claiming the regulations are “unlawful”.
After a two-week private arbitration hearing took place in June, The Times reported on 12 August a decision is now due within the next week.
Football Insider revealed on 6 June Newcastle were prepared to submit documents in support of Man City before the hearing took place.
A relaxation of the rules would mean top-flight sides could agree sponsorship deals as high as they wanted with no challenge, increasing the amount they could spend under the profit and sustainability rules (PSR).
Newcastle could ‘compete with anyone’ if Man City win case
Newcastle were close to the PSR limit last season, with Premier League clubs only permitted to make £105million of losses over a rolling three-year period.
The north-east giants sold Yankuba Minteh to Brighton for £30million and Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest for £35million before the 30 June accounting deadline to help them avoid a potential points deduction.
Speaking to Sky Sports on 9 August, Eddie Howe claimed being forced to sell those young talents to keep their top stars at St James’ Park marked a big blow for his side.
The Newcastle boss insisted the PSR rules are the “biggest obstacle” preventing the club from progressing forward in the Premier League.
Despite speculation around the futures of star players Bruno Guimaraes, Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon, the trio all still remain part of Howe’s squad.

But Newcastle could face PSR issues again this season as their failure to qualify for European football means there will be no extra cash coming through the door.
Sources have told Football Insider the Tyneside club are likely waiting to see what happens with Man City’s APT case before deciding whether they will need to sell any key figures to avoid a potential spending breach.
Football Insider revealed on 10 June Newcastle could “compete with anyone” if the English champions win their case against the Premier League.
Any changes to the rules could potentially allow the Public Investment Fund (PIF) to secure more lucrative commercial deals in Saudi Arabia, ensuring the ownership group can pump more money into the club through its own resources.
