Newcastle ‘well placed to agree late signing’ – Stefan Borson
Newcastle United are likely to still be in the market to sign a player before the transfer window closes on Monday (3 February).
That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider he doesn’t believe the Tyneside club’s profit and sustainability (PSR) position is the reason why they missed out on deals for Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and Juma Bah.
Newcastle are understood to have pursued deals for the three defenders, who all joined Man City in January.
Eddie Howe’s side are yet to agree any new signings in the current window as they are believed to be close to the PSR limit again, with top-flight clubs only permitted to make a £105million loss over a rolling three-year period.
The north-east giants sold Miguel Almiron for £8million to Atlanta United this week, six years after signing him from the MLS club for £20million.
Newcastle signing drought isn’t solely down to PSR issues
Borson insisted Newcastle’s signing drought is unlikely to be solely down to their PSR situation.
He told Football Insider: “The PSR position definitely doesn’t restrict Juma Bah.
“He is an 18-year-old and he went for €6million (£5million), so I think you can put that to one side. Could they buy a £30million player like Khusanov? I don’t see why not.
“If you buy a player today, your PSR loss for this season is the transfer fee divided by five. If it’s £30million, it’s £6million, and then five sixths of that for the season because there is only five months left of the financial year, so it’s not significant.
“The wages are also not that significant. I don’t really buy that that’s the key driver for why they have not been able to buy anybody.
“I would expect them still to be in the market on Monday for somebody.
“They have sold Almiron. It’s not a big deal and I would think his book value is very low. They got about £8million for him, so I think overall they will have a little bit of leeway from that.
“But we know that they are tight on PSR still. That’s not a surprise. We know they went to the wire last year.

“But I don’t think it’s the key driver for some of these smaller deals. They can do smaller deals because they are not going to move the dial.
“They are definitely tight, but I wouldn’t put the failure to buy players of that scale down to PSR.”
