Newcastle were ready to sell their two superstars for ‘mega’ fees – pundit

Newcastle United stars Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak are starting to ‘believe their own hype’ after being linked with big-money moves in the summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-Scotland striker Frank McAvennie believes that failing to secure moves in the summer is the reason behind Guimaraes, 26, and Isak, 25, struggling to perform under the Premier League ‘spotlight’ this season.

After ending last season as the Premier League’s third-highest goalscorer with 21, Isak has only managed to score once in Newcastle’s opening five Premier League games.

It’s been a similar story for Guimaraes, with fans tearing into the central midfielder following his poor performance as captain against Fulham.

Newcastle stars Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak need to improve

Eddie Howe’s side remain in 6th place following their 3-1 defeat to Fulham, having won three, drawn one, and lost one of their opening five Premier League games.

The Tynesiders will need Guimaraes and Isak to be at their best as they prepare to face current champions Man City at St James’ Park on Saturday (September 28).

“Last year he (Guimaraes) was a star, he was this and he was that his and Isak the boy up front, they were going to sell them for mega millions”, McAvennie told Football Insider.

“It just shows you, a couple of bad games, some people believe in their own hype, I’m not saying that’s what’s happening to this boy.

“We keep talking about Celtic and Rangers, how they have to win all the time but you’re in the spotlight with Premier League clubs.

“It’s worldwide and you’ve got to produce and I think people forget this.

“It’s alright doing it one week and then the next week, you’ve got to do it all the time.

“I said it with Celtic and West Ham, it was a bad day at the office for Newcastle.

“It wasn’t good but they had moments, they could have won the game, they just didn’t take them.”
