Noel Whelan delivers instant verdict on Leeds display against Bristol City
By Dominic Toner
Noel Whelan believes that Leeds’ defensive display was “concerning” in the 2-1 victory over Bristol City.
The Whites earned an important three points on Tuesday night in the Championship as they bounced back from the loss to Cardiff.
Chris Wood and Pablo Hernandez were the scorers for the hosts, while Milan Drujic scored a consolation goal with the last kick of the game.
Garry Monk’s side were under pressure in the second-half despite holding a two-goal advantage and goalkeeper Rob Green made a number of top saves.
BBC pundit and ex-Leeds forward Whelan was delighted his former side got the three points, but was worried about the defensive discipline late on in the match.
“Once you get into dangerous areas, you can get crowded out if you take too many touches – just get your shot off,” Whelan told BBC Radio Leeds, as quoted by the BBC Leeds matchday blog (Tuesday, 9:43pm). “Hernandez and Roofe were guilty of that at times but Leeds got the win today.
“Leeds were guilty of letting them back in right at the end, though, and I think the word for that is concerning. Bristol City shouldn’t have had some of the chances they did.”
Leeds tightened their grip on their play-off place with the win and are now six points above seventh-placed Norwich.
The Whites managed to continue their imperious home form and they have won seven of their last eight league matches at Elland Road.
Wood managed to score his 22nd goal of the season for the Yorkshire giants and keep his goalscoring form up, while Hernandez continues to be the creative spark.
However, Monk will be keen to address the defensive issue that Whelan raises as they were put under pressure for most of the second-half.
In other Leeds news, Wood has explained what the club must do to secure promotion.
