Herrera: This is the dressing room stance on Rangers boss Caixinha
By James Black
Rangers striker Eduardo Herrera has launced a defence of manager Pedro Caixinha after criticism following the Scottish League Cup semi-final defeat by Motherwell – saying “it’s not fair” on the Portuguese boss.
Louis Moult scored a second-half double to stun the Gers in Sunday’s Hampden clash and the result has only increased pressure on the boss after a series of poor results.
Caixinha has now lost two semi-finals in six months, as well as presiding over the shambolic Europa League exit to Progres Niederkorn and a 5-1 Old Firm defeat to Celtic, and fans are calling for the manager to be replaced before the season is a write-off.
Mexican striker Herrera believes Caixinha knows what is required to turn thing around at Ibrox and insists that the Gers dressing room still has a positive stance about the manager.
“It’s not fair on the manager because we are the ones performing on the pitch” Herrera said, as quoted by the Scottish Sun website.
“We were looking for a result, and we could have got it because we had the chances but we didn’t take them.
“The manager is a really good coach who works very hard, he knows what it means to be at a big club.
“He knows what it takes to represent Rangers, and we as players have absolute confidence in him.”
Herrera joined the Light Blues from Liga MX side UNAM Pumas but has been mainly used as a substitute by Caixinha so far.
With Colombian striker Alfredo Morelos ahead of him in the pecking order at Ibrox, Herrera will need to up his performances if he is to force his way into Caixinha’s starting XI.
Next up for the Gers is the visit of Kilmarnock to Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership on Wednesday night as they look to close the six-point gap to leaders Celtic and Aberdeen.
The leaders will go head-to-head at the same time so it will be a an opportunity for Caixinha’s side to close the gap on one of them.
