‘Not good enough’ – BBC pundit makes bizarre Rangers claim, discusses manager vacancy

BBC Scotland pundit Michael Stewart has bizarrely claimed Rangers are not good enough to challenge Aberdeen despite the two sides being neck and neck in the Scottish Premiership for most of the first-half of the season.

The two sides met a few weeks ago in back-to-back clashes with the Gers coming out on top both times although the Ibrox side currently trail the Dons by three points after the surprise defeat to St. Johnstone on Saturday.

League leaders Celtic are only three points further ahead than Aberdeen despite losing their first league game since May 2016 on Sunday.

Stewart also revealed that he wasn’t sure over which direction was best for the Gers to take as they continue to search for Pedro Caixinha’s long-term successor.

“I wouldn’t say the players are not playing for Murty,” Stewart said, in BBC Sportsound Extra’s Facebook Live broadcast.

“They’ve just won four matches in a row, when was the last time they did that?

“It’s a fair point that the squad is not good enough to challenge Aberdeen and Celtic although they beat Aberdeen twice.

“There are a lot of decisions to be made by the Rangers board. Murty until the end of the season? That’s a stop gap.

“Or they actually get somebody longer term – I’m not 100 per cent which way is the right way to go.”

The Gers take on Kilmarnock on Saturday afternoon and will be desperate to put pressure on the Dons and Celtic with a trip to Celtic Park rapidly approaching.

Since sacking Pedro Caixinha on October 26th, Rangers have won six of their nine games in the Scottish Premiership – including wins over Aberdeen at home and away – as the Light Blues have closed the gap at the top of the table.

Interim boss Graeme Murty is expected to remain in charge until the new year.
