Official offer expected from Newcastle for top flight international hit man – report

Leicester City are expecting fellow Premier League side Newcastle United to make an official offer for Algerian striker Islam Slimani in the January transfer window, according to a report.

The Daily Mail claim on their website that the Foxes are waiting on bids from both the Magpies and Watford for the 29-year-old forward, who arrived in England’s top flight in a £30million (€35million) deal from Portuguese side Sporting back in 2016.

However the 55-cap, 26-goal international hit man has struggled to shine in the Premier League, with seven goals in 33 league appearances for Leicester, and it is said they are looking to offload him to boost transfer funds for their top targets, despite having a contract until 2021.

Football Insider verdict

Newcastle are in dire straits when it comes to their threat up front, and they could really do with some proven Premier League talent to boost their hopes of survival this season. However, Slimani is anything but proven, with not a single goal in 10 league outings this season. Can he turn his fortunes around and rebuild his reputation at another top flight club? Perhaps, but this is not the season for Newcastle to be taking risks. Unlike other sides, the Magpies’ funds are severely limited and every penny counts when it comes to recruitment. Slimani will not come cheap, and with Watford also in the running, they cannot afford to be embroiled in a transfer battle.
