Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is a big fan of new Tottenham striker arrival: ‘This is what I like about him most’

Mason Melia officially joined Tottenham on 1 January for a record-breaking fee.

The Republic of Ireland forward is believed to have plenty of potential and netted 14 goals last season.

As a result, plenty of Tottenham fans are excited to see Melia in action over the coming months as they hope to see the next big star develop at the North London club.

Hype around the forward appears to be at a high, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer quick to highlight the potential of the 18-year-old.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: I love Mason Melia’s pressing

While Tottenham are in dire need of attacking reinforcements, Melia could one day become a star at the North London club.

Signing for £1.66million, a record for the League of Ireland, there is a hope that Spurs have acquired the next big star from the division.

Back in August, Solskjaer faced Melia in the Europa Conference League qualifying round, with Besiktas taking on St Patrick’s Athletic.

Here, he was complimentary of the young forward, and was quick to praise his pressing skills.

He told the Irish Independent on 7 August 2025: “Melia has a bright future ahead of him, keeps getting runs and getting in the good areas.

“One of the things I like most about him is his attitude of pressing, he does his defensive job as well, in the second half, he was tasked to sit on one of our midfielders, and he did the job.

“Tottenham have made a good signing.”

How good is Melia?

When looking at Melia’s stats, it appears that the hype around the forward is justified.

According to Fotmob on 2 January, the youngster’s stats are excellent as he dominated the Irish Premier Division last season.

Per game, he was averaging 2.96 shots, a 0.52 xG, 0.45 goals and 5.89 touches in the opposition box.

Therefore, Thomas Frank will be looking to utilise these qualities as the youngster aims to develop into a Premier League player.

Tottenham have not had a star striker since Harry Kane’s departure. Now, there will be a hope that Melia could one day be his successor.

Hopefully, Spurs fans will soon get a glimpse of their new signing before the Dane decides what to do with their new signing.
