Patrick Bamford: ‘We know how it happened’ as expert suggests real reason for Leeds injury woes
Alex McLeish has claimed Patrick Bamford has been “overplayed” at Leeds United in recent seasons after his latest injury setback.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider’s Russell Edge, the former Scotland manager suggested the 28-year-old could have suffered a “stress injury”.
As quoted by journalist Graham Smyth on Monday (7 February), Marcelo Bielsa revealed Bamford is still suffering with the foot injury suffered in training ahead of the defeat to Newcastle.
The Argentine boss confirmed the striker is still in pain and has not been able to jog as a result.
McLeish raised concerns of “burnout” for Bamford back in March 2021 and insisted his body “needs a rest” after another injury blow in November.
He suggested this latest issue is a result of the hitman’s body being “pummelled”.
“You wonder if that’s an injury that’s a result of being overplayed,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.
“Sometimes you can get stress injuries. That appears to be the case. It’s not like we didn’t say we told you so. We told you so.
“We kind of tipped that one, we tipped it. Not only him, but loads of other players who have been playing week in, week out. Internationals, the lot.
“All of a sudden there’s an injury and you go: ‘How did that happen?’
“We know how it happened because their bodies have been pummelled. That’s a key factor.”

Bamford has played just six times in the Premier League for Leeds this season.
He has suffered ankle, hamstring and foot problems during an injury-plagued campaign.
