Patterson tipped to make ‘big impact’ on Premier League after Everton update reported – pundit

Noel Whelan has claimed Rangers defender Nathan Patterson would be a “great replacement” for Everton captain Seamus Coleman in the long-term.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds United striker suggested the 19-year-old could have a similar impact on the Premier League to that of Andy Robertson or Kieran Tierney.

Rangers are in the market for a new right-back with Seamus Coleman, 32, into the latter stages of his career at Goodison Park.

As revealed by Football Insider (August 11th), the Toffees are willing to listen to offers for Jonjoe Kenny if they sign a new full-back before next week’s transfer deadline.

The Mirror‘s John Cross reported on August 22nd that Everton had submitted a £5million bid for Nathan Patterson, which has reportedly been rejected by Rangers.

Whelan suggested Rafael Benitez’s side should return to the table with an improved offer for the Scotland international.

“I’m sure he’d be a great replacement for Coleman,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“Everton are rebuilding in certain areas of the field.

“Coleman has got to an age where he is not going to play every game so the club have to look for someone who will give them longevity at fullback.

“A lot of great full-backs have come from Scotland with Kieran Tierney and Andy Robertson the two that spring to mind of late. Perhaps Patterson is the next Scottish player who can make a big impact down here.

“Everton need more legs in that position and that is something that Patterson can provide for them.”
