‘People will follow’ – Alan Shearer makes claim about potential next Rangers boss
Alan Shearer has claimed that his former England team-mate Steven Gerrard will be able to attract high-profile players to Ibrox if he is appointed Rangers manager because of what he achieved in his playing days.
Shearer has conceded though that Gerrard – who has agreed to take over at Ibrox, according to the Daily Mirror – will need money to spend if he is to mount a challenge to Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic.
“He’ll be able to attract bigger players because of who he is and what he brings to the football club,” Shearer said, as quoted by BBC Sport.
“Wherever he goes, people will follow because he’s such a huge name.
“It’s a big if because there are no guarantees but if everything is put in place and he is promised funds – and I’m pretty sure if he accepts they would have to deliver what they have promised to him – I think it’s a no-brainer for him.”
The task of the challenge that Gerrard faces if he takes over at Ibrox was laid bare on Sunday when Rangers were thrashed 5-0 by a rampant Celtic side who in the process of victory clinched their seventh successive league title.
Football Insider verdict
Gerrard really does have a massive decision to make regarding the managers’ job at Ibrox. If he watched the game at Celtic Park, he will realise that the Ibrox side need both a clearout and a massive injection of cash to even try and compete with Celtic next season. Of course, Gerrard will no doubt ask for money to be available if he is appointed Gers boss but it is not going to be an easy job at all, but perhaps that is why Gerrard wants to take the job on, as he fancies a challenge, which taking over at Ibrox certainly will be.
