Pep Guardiola apologises in new Man City message after shock claim

Man City manager Pep Guardiola has taken to social media to apologise for his surprising “self-harm” comments after their 3-3 Champions League draw with Feyenoord on Tuesday (November 26).

Speaking to the press after the game, the 53-year-old appeared with visible scratches on his head. When asked about them, Guardiola jokingly responded that he “wanted to harm himself” before laughing it off and walking away.

City threw away a three-goal lead on Tuesday, with the Dutch giants scoring three goals in the last 15 minutes to earn a valuable away draw.

The draw leaves City down in 15th in the new Champions League group phase, meaning they could be forced to play an extra two-legged knock-out round.

Guardiola’s side are now winless in their last six games across all competitions, losing five and drawing one as hopes of a typically trophy-laden season fade away.

Since signing a new two-year contract, Guardiola has found himself in uncharted waters, enduring the worst run of form in his managerial career with his side yet to secure a win.

Acknowledging the gravity of his comments, whether intentional or not, Guardiola has taken to X, formally known as Twitter, to apologise.

He said: “I was caught off guard with a question at the end of a press conference last night about a scratch which had appeared on my face and explained that a sharp fingernail had accidentally caused this.

“My answer was in no way intended to make light of the very serious issue of self harm.

“I know that many people struggle with mental health issues every day, and I would like to take this moment to highlight one of the ways in people can seek help, by calling the Samaritans hotline on 116 123 or emailing [email protected]

Things won’t be getting easier any time soon for the current Premier League champions as they face league leaders Liverpool on Sunday (December 1).

A defeat would see City fall a whopping 12 points behind Arne Slot’s side after just 13 games and their hopes of a fifth consecutive title severely dented.
