‘Perfect’ Bergwijn tipped for significant Tottenham role after Sky update – pundit

Noel Whelan has claimed Steven Bergwijn can be a “seriously good weapon” for Tottenham after his incredible brace against Leicester.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 24-year-old is the “perfect” understudy for the likes of Lucas Moura and Heung-min Son.

Bergwijn struck twice in 80 seconds from the substitutes bench as Tottenham came from behind to seal a sensational 3-2 victory over Leicester on Wednesday (19 January).

As quoted by Sky Sports post-match, Spurs boss Antonio Conte insisted the winger is an “important player” and added that he is “happy to stay” at the club.

The broadcaster claim Bergwijn is the subject of interest from Sevilla and Ajax – with Tottenham apparently rejecting a bid of £15million from the Dutch giants.

When asked about Bergwijn’s future, Whelan told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge: “I didn’t think they should have considered getting rid of him in the first place.

“He’s not had enough time at the club. He’s only just come in, and he’s still learning his trade – but you can see that there’s a really good player in there.

“He could be a seriously good weapon for Tottenham. He’s quick, and he’s got great technique.

“When you’re trying to build a squad and you look at the likes of Chelsea and Man City, they have these types of options.

“Bergwijn could push to be in that side regularly now in the next couple of seasons. If they get Son injured, or Moura – he’s the perfect replacement.”

The winger joined Tottenham in January 2020 and has scored seven goals in 65 games in England.

Bergwijn’s last-gasp strikes mean Spurs keep the pressure on fourth-place Arsenal in the battle for Champions League football.
