‘Phenomenal’ – Jadon Sancho questioned as Man United exit saga rumbles on

Jadon Sancho has been questioned over his decision to reject transfer interest from Serie A side Roma.

Sancho’s decision to reject an approach from Roma has prompted the Italian outfit to turn their attention towards Aston Villa’s Leon Bailey.

The England winger notched five goals and eight assists while on loan with Chelsea last season, but it wasn’t enough to seal a permanent move to West London.

Meanwhile, Man United have slashed their asking price for Sancho, amid their desire to part company with the 25-year-old before the transfer window shuts.

Sancho ‘amazes’ journalist by rejecting Roma approach

Amid their attempts to facilitate Sancho’s exit, Man United also want rid of Alejandro Garnacho, who scored 11 goals last season.

Meanwhile, after the former Borussia Dortmund man turned down Roma, Sky Sports’ Dougie Critchley took to X on Monday, 18 August, as he wrote: “Finding an agreement with a player currently earning a reported £300,000 per week, is always going to be a challenge for a Serie A club.

“But I’m amazed Jadon Sancho isn’t jumping at the chance to join Roma.

“Get to live in Rome, away from the spotlight of the English media, rebuild in a league that suits his technical/less intense style, working under Gian Piero Gasperini who has a reputation for revitalising careers/supercharging the numbers of his attacking players.

“Maybe it’s just selfishness on my part, because I’d love to see it happen. But this is a phenomenal opportunity!”

Man United star should have accepted Roma proposal

Football Insider verdict

Sancho was previously a remarkable asset for his former club, Borussia Dortmund, scoring 16 goals and producing 18 assists in his final season with the Bundesliga giants before joining Man United.

However, the ex-Manchester City academy starlet has never scored more than seven goals in a season since moving to Old Trafford from Germany.

As outlined by Critchley, a move to Serie A would likely suit the 23-cap England international, who previously excelled in the Bundesliga.

Furthermore, Roma boss Gasperini proved his worth when he won the Europa League with Atalanta in 2024, and would likely be a positive influence on Sancho.

The Italian capital giants have not landed a top-four spot in Serie A since 2018, so the Man United man could have entered a lower-pressure environment than the one at Old Trafford.

Now that Sancho has rejected Roma’s advances, he faces the possibility of failing to find a new club before the transfer window slams shut.
