Phil Foden: Robinson issues ‘unbelievable’ claim as Man City controversy analysed

Atletico Madrid defender Felipe should have been shown a straight red for his challenge on Man City attacker Phil Foden, according to Paul Robinson.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one “cannot believe” there was only two yellows and one red shown to Diego Simeone’s side.

Foden had to have his head bandaged after jumping for a header with Felipe in first half of the second leg at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Referee Daniel Siebert awarded a foul but did not caution the Atleti centre-back for the incident.

Felipe would later be sent off for a second bookable offence after another nasty challenge on Foden.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his thoughts on Felipe’s first half challenge, Robinson said: “He was ver lucky to escape a red card.

“Atletico had a game plan. They activated it very well. They do the dark arts very well.

“Man City did well because Atletico were trying to upset them.

“The challenge on Foden should have been a straight red. I cannot believe there was only two bookings and one red card for Atletico in the whole game.”
