Phillips claims two fringe Newcastle players set for ‘huge’ roles under Howe

Kevin Phillips has heaped praise on Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe for his “clever management” of fringe duo Joelinton and Jonjo Shelvey.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Premier League striker said Howe, 43, gave the two players “a huge confidence boost” with his comments last week.

As quoted by the Guardian, Howe said at his first press conference that Shelvey and Joelinton were a “huge” part of his plans at St. James’ Park.

The duo responded with outstanding displays on Saturday as the Magpies drew 3-3 with Brentford.

However, Howe was absent yesterday after testing positive for Covid-19 in the build-up to the game.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Howe’s comments, Philips said: “It did not surprise me to hear Howe come out and say that.

“It is clever management because it would have been a huge confidence boost for the two players.

“They have not performed to the best of their ability over the past 18 months. Joelinton has certainly been disappointing.

“On his day, Shelvey can ping the ball about and create opportunities but he lets the side down every now and again. He can do something daft.

“It does not surprise me that Howe came out and said that. He said that are a big part of his plans and after yesterday you think they will be.

“When a new manager comes in everyone ups their game. We have seem glimpses from Joelinton. He needs to start showing it every week.”
