Phillips tips Liverpool to ‘blow everyone away’ with secret signing after Romano reveal

Kevin Phillips claims Liverpool can “blow everyone away” if they have been secretly working on transfer deals.

The Sunderland legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the latest Liverpool transfer reports.

According to Fabrizio Romano, speaking on his Here We Go podcast (24 August), the Reds are “still active” in the market and are “calling agents”.

Liverpool have only signed centre back Ibrahima Konate this summer.

The club has also so far failed to replace Gini Wijnaldum, who left to join PSG on a free transfer.

In light of Romano’s report, Phillips insists Liverpool could stun everyone if they have been working on deals in the background.

“It would be very difficult to get two players in over the next week,” Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Do they go for a run of the mill player who gives you back up? Or do they wait until January or next summer?

“In terms of that midfield area, maybe that’s somewhere they will look at.

“They could do with another striker but I can’t see them getting both in.

“I would like to see them sign that striker but I just don’t think Liverpool can get that top, top striker.

“Unless they have something going on in the background which would blow everyone away. I can see it happening.

“It’s going to be hard to get people in and if someone does come in, it won’t be their main target.”

The Reds’ Premier League season has started with a flourish with two wins from two.

However, they have been drawn into a tricky Champions League group including AC Milan, Porto and Atletico Madrid.

In other news, Gabby Agbonlahor has tipped Liverpool to complete “the signing of the summer”.
