PL club close in on six-figure deal for versatile attacker wanted by Newcastle – report

By Harvey Byrne

Premier League side Leicester are closing in on a six-figure deal for versatile Coventry attacker George Thomas, according to a report.

The Independent have detailed on their website that the 20-year-old, who can play on the right, left and in the centre has been attracting plenty of interest this summer with each of Swansea, Newcastle and Brighton named specifically as wanting the out of contract youngster.

However, it would also seem that the Foxes are now leading the race at the final stages with the Swans said to be unwilling to pay as much as £500,000, while it was reported that Leicester were more enthusiastic about Thomas’ signing than both the Magpies and Brighton.

The Independent have claimed that Leicester initially made an offer of around £300,000 earlier in the month and are now expected to return this week with a second offer closer to £500,000, which is the fee Coventry are hoping for from the compensation package.

Thomas is also born in Leicester and he will now be looking to continue his development after playing in 53 matches in total for Coventry, returning nine goals.

Football Insider verdict:

It is unclear how interested Newcastle were for Thomas, while they also have their own emerging young forward in Adam Armstrong, who is being sent out on continuous loan deals in a search for game time. This means that Thomas certainly wouldn’t have been guaranteed playing time at the north east giants and at 20 he should certainly be close to reaching his potential and being readied for senior football. This is a deal that the Magpies could one day look back at and regret, but in the current day there are certainly more exciting prospects than Thomas in the world and Newcastle should focus their attentions on those while also bringing in ready made first team stars this summer.
