PL club urged 26-goal forward to snub Newcastle – report

By Harvey Byrne

Chelsea urged youngster Tammy Abraham to snub Newcastle due to the city’s nightlife, according to a report.

The Mirror has claimed that the Blues advised the 19-year-old from moving to the north east due to the amount of off-field distractions available in the Toon for a well-paid footballer.

This has meant that Abraham will now join top-flight rivals Swansea after the European Under-21s Championships in Poland, where he will be reunited with ex-Chelsea assistant manager Paul Clement.

It is however detailed that Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez was “desperate” to and Abraham on a season-long loan deal amid reports that the Spaniard is also growing frustrated at the club’s lack of summer activity.

The teenager bagged a fine 26 goals in 48 matches in all competitions during a loan at Championship club Bristol City last season.

He will now be keen to continue his fine scoring run at a higher level in the Premier League, while Newcastle will be on the search for another alternative to star Dwight Gayle as they aim for survival.

Football Insider verdict:

Abraham is clearly a talented youngster and it is understandable why Chelsea are keen to ensure nothing goes wrong for him off the pitch. In recent years alone Newcastle youngsters Rolando Aarons and Nile Ranger have found trouble with the law for their off field activities and cases like these will give the Magpies a bad reputation alongside the city being portrayed as a party one. Therefore, it is not too surprising why the Blues have made their decision, but it is a clear blow for Newcastle and manager Rafa Benitez as they miss out on a key target due to reasons other than football.
