Celtic attacker faces race for fitness ahead of clash v Rangers – confirmed

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has revealed that the Hoops could be without attacker Stuart Armstrong for Sunday’s Scottish Cup semi-final clash against Rangers.

Rodgers disclosed that the 26-year-old, who will be one of the Hoops’ main attacking threats from midfield, is receiving treatment for a calf injury, and the full extent of the issue will be known within the next few days.

“Craig will return to the squad and we’ll assess over the next 24 hours the team and which team we put out. We are keeping an eye on Stuart, knock with his calf so we’ll need to assess that over the next few days” Rodgers said, as quoted on the Hoops’ official Twitter page.

Armstrong hasn’t been in the best form this season, but on his day he is more than a match for any player in Scotland, and if he misses out on the game it will be a blow for the Hoops.

Football Insider verdict

The absence of Armstrong would be a big blow for the Hoops, as he has often given his best performances in the Old Firm derbies, last season he was excellent in both matches at Ibrox in particular. After recovering from a hernia operation, it seemed like Armstrong was getting back to his best, with a goal against Ross County a few matches ago, but now it looks like his progress has been checked once again. His potential absence will give the likes of Tom Rogic the chance to shine, but it is a blow as on his day he is one of the best players in Scottish football.
