Premier League history maker to replace sacked Marti Cifuentes at Leicester City

Andy King will lead Leicester City on an interim basis after Marti Cifuentes was officially sacked on Sunday.

Cifuentes was scheduled to take part in media duty for Leicester on Sunday, but the Spaniard has now been dismissed.

The decision comes after Leicester were beaten 2-1 by Oxford United on Saturday in a calamitous display at the King Power Stadium.

Russell Martin is the favourite to take over at Leicester, with the Englishman available after leaving Rangers in October.

Mark Robins is also expected to be in the running for the Leicester job, with decision-makers in need of an instant impact.

Andy King to take charge of Leicester City

Cifuentes was reportedly sacked following a meeting at the King Power Stadium with Leicester chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha on Sunday.

The Spaniard arrived at in the summer following a positive stint at QPR, but his time with the Foxes was dismal.

Cifuentes’ team conceded goals at a shocking rate, and had not kept a Championship clean sheet since August.

Decision-makers have been keen to give the 43-year-old a chance, but after three consecutive games without victory, a line has been drawn.

An official statement read on Sunday that Cifuentes “leaves with the thanks of everyone at Leicester City for his professionalism and dedication during his time with us.”

The Foxes have also confirmed that King will take charge while the process to appoint a new permanent manager takes place.

King spent 14 years with Leicester, making 379 appearances. When he and the Foxes shocked the world by winning the Premier League in 2016, he became the first player since the 1960s to win the top three divisions with the same club.

What games King will take charge of Leicester for

King’s first game in charge will be an important one. It is against Charlton Athletic, who sit below the Foxes and will be hoping to take advantage of the uncertain situation at the King Power Stadium.

Should Leicester not find a new manager within two weeks, the former midfielder will lead his team to a difficult away trip to Birmingham City.

Three days after that, and King’s side will take on Southampton at the King Power Stadium.

But decision-makers will hope to have a new manager in before then, where that be Martin or indeed a name not yet known to the press.
