Pundit backs Tottenham to complete ‘big money’ Alessandro Bastoni deal after source’s reveal

Tottenham must complete the “big money” signing of Alessandro Bastoni in January as a matter of urgency.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Spurs’ January plans.

According to The Sun (9 November), Tottenham remain keen on signing Bastoni, who they chased in the summer of 2022.

This site revealed on 25 May that Spurs identified the 23-year-old, as their first-choice left-sided centre-back ahead of the summer transfer window.

However, a deal was not completed and Spurs instead signed Clement Lenglet on loan from Barcelona.

McAvennie claims Tottenham should make signing Bastoni their priority.

“We know they need new defenders as a matter of urgency,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“The guys they have there just aren’t good enough. I have to say I have been underwhelmed by the last few signings they have made.

“They haven’t changed anything, Tottenham still concede a lot of goals and they concede first every time they play.

“So if you are going to go out in January and sign a new defender, Bastoni, whoever, then go and get it done. The club have backed Conte so far and they need to do it again.

“If this is the guy he wants then spend the big money to get him there. Sometimes it’s as simple as that.”

Lenglet has made 14 total appearances for Spurs.

He started his new side’s last four league games before the World Cup break.
