Pundit can’t believe ‘crazy’ update on Newcastle United bid to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin
Newcastle United should not pay £40million for Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the magpies’ hunt for a new striker.
The main competition for Calvert-Lewin’s signature has been Arsenal but they are prioritising the capture of Gabriel Jesus from Man City and are making progress on a deal.

On 14 May, Football Insider revealed talks have taken place with the 25-year-old’s representatives as Newcastle make their pitch to lure him to the north-east.
However, The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards has now reported (30 May) the Magpies have been quoted £40million for the Everton hitman.
McAvennie claims Newcastle would be making a mistake by sanctioning a £40million move for the striker.
“It’s crazy, money has gone through the roof in the Premier League. Calvert-Lewin, for me, I’m not sure,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“He’s a good player, no doubting the boy’s ability. He’s not shown me he wants to play football.
“He hasn’t shown me he wants to be in the team and fighting for a place.
“Maybe I haven’t seen him enough but that is my impression of him.
“£40million is a lot of money for him, I think there are better options out there.”

Calvert-Lewin spent the majority of the 2021-22 Premier League season injured.
He made 17 appearances and scored five goals with his last strike keeping Everton in the Premier League during a 3-2 win over Crystal Palace (19 May).
