Pundit can’t believe ‘draining’ Alfredo Morelos development amid Rangers ‘whispers’

Noel Whelan has insisted the new Rangers boss must “draw a line” under Alfredo Morelos’ time at the club and secure a replacement “quickly”.

The former Leeds and Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the speculation surrounding the 26-year-old will be “draining” for Gers players and fans.

Morelos is out of contract in May 2023 and is yet to show any sign of a potential renewal at Ibrox.

He has started just one Scottish Premiership game this season with summer signing Antonio Colak taking up the scoring burden.

Football Insider revealed on Friday (25 November) that Rangers are plotting a January move for Bristol City attacker Antoine Semenyo, 22.

The Glasgow giants are still managerless following the sacking of Giovanni van Bronckhorst – with QPR boss Michael Beale and former Burnley man Sean Dyche the front-runners for the hot seat.

Whelan suggested one of the first acts of their potential reign must be to “get some clarity” on Morelos’ future.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “We’ve heard whsipers about Morelos. Not just this season but for years now.

“I think Rangers have got to draw a line under him and look elsewhere.

“He’s been a great goalscorer and a massive part of their recent history. But there’s all this controversy over a new contract, and the noises coming out are not positive.

“It’s time to get some clarity on this. If he doesn’t want to be there then you’ve got to move him on quickly.

“We’ve had this season after season. It must be really draining for the Rangers players and fans.

“It’s not healthy. The new manager has got to come with some ideas about how you replace a player like him and get it done quickly.”
