Pundit can’t believe Erling Haaland-Man City deal amid Sky’s £250m claim
Man City have essentially signed Erling Haaland for “nothing” thanks to the release clause in this Borussia Dortmund contract.
That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about City’s new star signing.
Man City confirmed on Tuesday (10 May) that they have “reached an agreement in principle” with Dortmund for the 21-year-old.
Sky Sports (11 May) claim the total value of the deal, including the transfer fee, agent fees, signing bonuses and other costs, is around £85.5million.
However, Sky’s Kaveh Solhekol claims the deal will cost closer to £250million if you include commission paid to intermediaries and Haaland’s potential wage.
However, Kenny claims the transfer is “essentially free” for City.
“You have to say fair play to his agent for getting that release clause in his Dortmund contract,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“The trying is, what is Haaland worth? £150million? More? Man City aren’t paying anywhere near what they should be.
“Because the fee is so low, he can demand this higher wages. He and his agent know that they can demand more because, let’s face it, City have got a bargain.
“So look at how much his contract is worth over x amount of years and how much Man City are paying, it’s like they have got him on essentially a free transfer.
“If City were going to pay however much Haaland is actually worth, they would be paying millions and millions more over however many years.
“It’s an unbelievable bit of business thanks to that release clause.”

Haaland has scored 85 goals in 88 total appearances since joining Dortmund in January 2020.
City have operated without an out and out striker this season after failing to sign Harry Kane in the summer of 2021.
