Pundit can’t believe Newcastle could appoint Lampard after Telegraph report

Noel Whelan has insisted Frank Lampard has not got the “experience” for the impending “relegation battle” at Newcastle this season.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed there will be “other candidates” for the job who are favoured more than the 43-year-old.

According to the Telegraph (October 15th), Lampard is on the shortlist to replace Steve Bruce at Newcastle and is being “pushed” by some members of the new ownership to get the nod for the position.

Newcastle

A Saudi-backed consortium fronted by businesswoman Amanda Staveley completed a £305million takeover of the Tyneside club earlier this month.

As such, current incumbent Bruce is widely expected to be replaced as manager as Newcastle look to avoid relegation.

Lampard’s reign as Chelsea manager came to an end in January of this year after a poor run of results.

Whelan claimed the former England international “doesn’t know what it’s all about” to be toward the wrong end of the table.

“He’s never been in this position, he’s not got the experience for a relegation battle,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“He doesn’t know what it’s all about. He’s only managed at Chelsea and Derby where they had the money to push at the top of the league.

“Generally, he does go to clubs who have got cash, and that means the pressure is on to win more games than you lose.

“Time will tell if he is the right man for the job if he were to be appointed.

“I’m sure there are other candidates higher up the list than Frank Lampard.”

Lampard got the Chelsea nod after spending a season with Championship side Derby County.

Newcastle are winless this season and sit third-bottom in the table.
