Mills excited by 'perfect' Tarkowski completing move to Newcastle

James Tarkowski would be the “perfect” player for Newcastle United right now, according to Danny Mills.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Leeds United and England full-back questioned whether Tarkowski could be part of a Newcastle side challenging for the Champions League.

The Telegraph reported (October 9) the defender is set to be one of the first signings made by the new owners of Newcastle.

Tarkowski is out of contract at the end of the season and it is reported he has a “gentleman’s agreement” with the club that could see him leave in January.

“You need the right characters to come in, it could well be that type of player,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“Do you bring in superstars? You’ve got to remember they’re still in a relegation battle. You still need players to get you out of that situation, players with a good attitude, a good work ethic, players that are going to work their socks off to get you out of it.

“They may not be the players that take you into the top-six or push for Champions League places.

“It all depends on what you want. Is it now? Or, is it the long-term?

“Tarkowski would be perfect for now and you can’t forget about the now. Is he going to take you to the next level and into the Champions League? I’m not sure.”

Tarkowski has played 191 times across all competitions for Burnley.

The 28-year-old has not missed a minute of Premier League action this season and captained the side against Man City at the weekend.
