Pundit can’t believe what Marcus Rashford did against Liverpool

Frank McAvennie has claimed Marcus Rashford was “awful” for Man United against Liverpool last weekend (5 March).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker said Bruno Fernandes’ antics took the pressure away from Rashford but was unimpressed with his display.

The 25-year-old played 85 minutes of United’s 7-0 defeat to Liverpool last Sunday (5 March) and was the first time he has failed to score since January.

Rashford has had an incredible turnaround under Erik ten Hag and was named player of the month for the third time this season.

The England international has now equalled Mohamed Salah’s record for most Player of the Month awards in a single season that was set back in 2017-18.

Rashford was back to his best once again when the Red Devils beat Real Betis 4-1 on 9 March, netting his 25th goal of the season.

But McAvennie couldn’t believe Rashford escaped the game against Liverpool without facing more criticism.

“Where was Rashford? It is not all about scoring goals, you have got to help out your teammates when you are getting bombarded like that,” he told Football Insider.

You have got to defend, you have got to drop back into midfield and help them out because they were getting overrun.

Rashford was doing nothing, I did not understand why he wasn’t trying to get back and defend. Get back into the midfield and help out until it settles down then go back up front.

Man United

It seems like nowadays players have to be told what to do. But he is a big boy, he can figure it out himself.

Everyone is talking about Rashford’s turnaround and rightly so but when you see performances like that, Fernandes is taking the pressure off him because of his antics but players like Rashford and [Luke] Shaw were awful.

In other news, according to sources, Man United fear they won’t be able to sell big-money defender due to ‘insane’ wages.
