Pundit ‘delighted’ about Ralf Rangnick twist at Man United

Ralf Rangnick’s Man United exit has nothing to do with taking the Austria job.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about

Man United confirmed on Sunday (29 May) that Rangnick, 63, will not take up a consultancy role as originally planned after becoming Austria manager on 29 April.

The German coach initially agreed to stay on as a consultant for two years after an interim spell as manager.

When he was announced as the Austria manager, Man United’s announcement insisted he would stay at the club.

However, McAvennie claims Rangnick would have left the club regardless of taking another job.

“I think he was leaving anyway, even if he didn’t take the Austria job,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“It went from bad to worse under him. It’s a strange one but he had to go. He wasn’t big enough to go in there.

“Nobody had heard of him. He had no real credentials but that was the same as Ole.

“This guy who came into Man United [Ten Hag], I don’t think he wanted to work with him.

“That, for me, is a bit of strength. It shows he’s his own boss and he’s gone in early doors which I’m delighted about.”

Man United struggled under Rangnick’s management.

He only won 11 of his 29 games in charge of the club.
