Pundit fears Bruno Guimaraes will sign for giants after Newcastle United source’s club-record reveal

Newcastle United must tie Bruno Guimaraes to a new deal to put off Real Madrid.

That’s according to former Hibernian striker Tam McManus, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the midfielder’s future.

On 15 October Football Insider revealed Newcastle are preparing to make the midfielder the best-paid player in the club’s history.

Guimaraes, 24, joined Newcastle in January from Lyon for £40million and signed a contract that runs until 2026, worth around £120,000 a week.

It is believed Newcastle are willing to offer Guimaraes a huge pay hike that would take him to around £200,000-a-week and extend his deal by two more years, meaning the club would end up paying him £60million in wages alone.

McManus fears Newcastle may not be able to keep Guimaraes from joining a so-called bigger club.

“I think when he came in there was a bit of, who is this guy?” McManus told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.

“Maybe the fans were expecting bigger names for bigger fees but when you see the job in the middle of the park he is just fantastic, there is some engine on him.

“He puts his foot in, gets a goal, I’m not surprised Newcastle are trying to sign him up. Listen, there aren’t many clubs in world football who can match the financial muscle Newcastle have.

“If your Real Madrid and Man City come in then obviously his head will be turned.

It makes sense to get him tied up because anyone who is performing at what you might call a smaller team, there will be interest.

“They will want to protect their investment.”
