Pundit hits out at Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool legal action launched

Noel Whelan has claimed Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp doesn’t have a point with his comments on Man City’s transfer spending.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Premier League champions have a “good business head” and “won’t overstep the mark”.

As quoted by The Guardian (14 October), Klopp suggested Man City can “do what they want” in the transfer market and suggested Liverpool cannot compete with Gulf state-owned clubs like Newcastle and Paris Saint-Germain.

According to The Telegraph (18 October), City sources have claimed the German’s comments were “xenophobic” – which has led to the Reds boss pursuing legal action in order to clear his name.

As per Transfermarkt, Man City actually raked in a transfer profit of £18.4million over the summer window – despite the arrivals of Erling Haaland and Kalvin Phillips, among others.

The two sides met in a pulsating encounter on Sunday (16 October), with Liverpool running out 1-0 winners at Anfield.

Whelan cited the reported £85million summer addition of Darwin Nunez.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I don’t think Klopp has a point here.

“They’ve sold a lot of players, taken a lot of money off the wage bill. They then brought someone in who was cheaper than Darwin Nunez.

“There’s not been a lot spent by Man City this season. They have a good business head, they’re not about to overstep the mark.

“Selling players like Sterling and Jesus means they can bring players like Haaland in – and they’ve done it cheaper than Nunez cost Liverpool.”
