Pundit issues ‘crazy’ James Milner claim after confirmed Liverpool news
It was a “no brainer” for Liverpool to offer James Milner a new deal as his experience is invaluable in the dressing room.
That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 36-year-old’s future.
On 6 June, it was confirmed Milner has signed a new one-year deal with the club.
The versatile midfielder was due to be out of contract this summer but will now feature in a 24th season as a professional.
He made 39 appearances in all competitions during the 2021-22 season as he remains an important player in Jurgen Klopp’s side.
McAvennie insists there was no chance of Milner leaving Liverpool this summer while he remains such an important player.
“He’s not got the mobility, he hasn’t got the physique of Ronaldo who is the same age,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“But when it comes to experience, having him and Henderson in that changing room, they won’t let you down.
“They would be crazy to let him go, he was always going to stay.
“It’s a no brainer and it’s great for James because he has another year. Everyone always says ‘play as long as you can’.
“It’s a no brainer for Klopp as well because he knows exactly what he is getting every time he steps onto the park.”

Milner has made 289 appearances for Liverpool.
In total, he has 814 senior appearances to his name.
