Pundit lambasts Aubameyang after update via Sky on Arsenal fall-out

Paul Robinson suspects there is “a clash of personalities” between Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang behind the scenes.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Premier League goalkeeper criticised Aubameyang, 32, for failing to set an example on or off the field as club captain.

Aubameyang was missing from the squad that were convincing 3-0 winners over Southampton on Saturday.

Speaking after the win (11 December), Arteta told Sky Sports his captain was missing because of “a disciplinary breach.”

It is the second time Aubameyang has been disciplined under Mikel Arteta.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of the news, Robinson said: “There is something not right there.

“There must be a clash of personalities between him and the manager.

“He has not been pulling up trees anyway, which doesn’t help things. If you are club captain and not playing well, you at least have to set an example off the field. You should be setting the precedent both on and off the field really.

“Everyone in the dressing room looks up to the captain. If the captain gets away with stuff you can have a problem in the dressing room.

“It sounds to me as if Arteta has handled it very well.”

Aubameyang has contributed seven goals and two assists in 15 appearances across all competitions this season.

He has just over 18 months left on his contract at the Emirates.
