Pundit lambasts ‘disgusting’ VAR as controversial Newcastle United footage analysed

The decision to not award Newcastle United a goal against Crystal Palace is “disgusting”.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about a controversial decision at St James’ Park on Saturday (3 September).

In the second half of Saturday’s draw, Tyrick Mitchell scored an own goal after the ball hit him in the face following a ball back across the box.

Mitchell was only able to make contact with the ball by pushing Joe Willock into Vincente Guaita while in midair, causing both players to go down injured.

Referee Michael Salisbury was sent to look at the VAR monitor and ruled out the goal, claiming Willock had fouled Guaita.

Kenny insists the goal should have been given.

“Yet again, I can’t get my head around it,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“You can clearly see a push from Mitchell on Willock. He forces Willock to collide with the goalkeeper and the ball then goes in off Mitchell.

“It’s a clear foul. It should be a foul the other way and a penalty and a clear red card. It’s dangerous. It was a clear goal for me.

“It’s wrong, I don’t get it. I don’t get how the referee has looked at that, or even the VAR who has probably also watched it 10 times, and they have come to the wrong decision.

“It’s so disappointing. It’s disgusting, what is going on at the minute.”

Newcastle also hit the post in the game while Alexander Isak missed a one-on-one in the first half.

Eddie Howe’s side are next in action against West Ham on Sunday (11 September).
