Pundit ‘shocked’ by Newcastle United source’s David De Gea update
Newcastle United would be a “good fit” for David De Gea following Nick Pope’s injury.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Rangers and Tottenham defender Alan Hutton admitted he is “shocked” that the former Man United shot-stopper is still a free agent.
As revealed by Football Insider (4 December), the Magpies are readying a move for the 33-year-old after Pope’s long-term injury sustained in their 1-0 win over Man United.

Football Insider sources also revealed (3 December) that the Englishman is facing a devastating four-month spell on the sidelines from a dislocated shoulder.
De Gea left Man United as a free agent at the end of last season after his contract expired, but it is believed he would have to take a pay cut from his reported £375,000-per-week wages at Old Trafford if he wants to join.
Hutton feels Pope will still be the long-term answer for Eddie Howe’s side, but the Spaniard is the “ideal” cover in the meantime.
“For a guy with his experience and his know-how, I’m shocked that he’s not got a new club,” he told Football Insider.
“I think Newcastle could be a good fit. I don’t think he would struggle in terms of dealing with that situation so if they can get someone in like that it’ll definitely help [cover Pope].
“I think Pope and De Gea both have the quality. De Gea has done it for so long and you think of the pressure he’s played under and the situations he’s been in at Man United.

“I know he’s not played for a bit and I’m sure he’s looking after himself.
“But in the grand scheme of things, he’s an ideal fit at this time but moving forward for longevity, you’d have to say Pope would start.”
