Pundit slams ‘awful’ Everton chiefs as ‘£85m’ claim issued

Paul Robinson has slammed the “awful” recruitment at Everton following the dismissal of Marcel Brands.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Spurs and England number one the Toffees have spent “£85million” more than their Merseyside rivals Liverpool but are “light years” behind them.

Everton confirmed on Sunday night that Brands had been sacked as director of football.

A Goodison Park source told Football Insider (6 December) that head of recruitment Gretar Rafn Steinsson could now be the next go.

Rafael Benitez wants to take full control of the club’s recruitment after a power struggle with Brands.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of the latest, Robinson said: “There is a lot of deadwood at that football club.

“The recruitment has been awful over the years.

“They are £85million ahead of Liverpool in spending in recent years. When you look at the two in football terms, they are light years apart. It is night and day.

“The amount of money they have spent is incredible for where they are and that is because the recruitment has been terrible.

“I am not Benitez’s biggest fan. I wasn’t a big advocate of him getting the job. It didn’t sit right with me.

“There is a lot of reasons why they are struggling. The recruitment has been bad and they have had lots of injuries.

“The squad is not good enough. There is no strength in depth. To ask Benitez to work miracles is a tough ask. It is not a good mix.”
