Pundit suggests Tottenham spending £80m on defender after transfer reveal
Frank McAvennie claims Tottenham need to spend upwards of £80million on a new centre back this summer.
The former Celtic striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, told Spurs to copy Liverpool and Manchester United’s recent transfer moves.
A Tottenham source has told Football Insider that the club are looking to sign a commanding centre-back blessed with “genuine pace” and capable of slotting straight into their starting XI next season.
This site revealed on Monday that Davinson Sanchez is up for sale as there is a recognition from within that he is too erratic.
Liverpool and Man United have spent significant fees on Virgil van Dijk and Harry Maguire in recent years.
Van Dijk had a massive impact at Liverpool and helped the club win the Champions League and Premier League after his arrival in 2018.
McAvennie insists Tottenham need to spend a similar fee on a defender if the club is to challenge next season.
“A big club like Tottenham needs dominating centre-halves,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“Liverpool and Manchester United spent £80million on new centre backs. Maguire isn’t as good as Van Dijk but they still spent the money.
“I think Tottenham need to spend that kind of money on a big centre half. They’ve never done that.
“All they’ve done is move Eric Dier back because he can’t get a game in midfield.
“I don’t understand it, it’s a strange one. They should be spending that kind of money this summer.”
The club is in a race to secure European football for next season as they sit seventh in the Premier League with three games to play.
Ryan Mason remains in charge of the first team.
In other news, a huge new development in Man United bid to sign Harry Kane can be revealed.
