Pundit tells Tottenham to seal ‘long-term’ deal – ‘it’s the biggest signing they could make’

Noel Whelan has claimed a long-term contract for Antonio Conte is “the biggest signing Tottenham could make right now”.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the current Spurs squad is now “his” after a number of summer acquisitions.

Conte has been linked with the Juventus job with current boss Max Allegri under pressure after a poor start to the new campaign.

Tottenham

The former Chelsea manager is out of contract at the end of the season – with Tottenham reportedly holding the option to extend his stay by a further 12 months.

Spurs currently sit third in the Premier League and are yet to lose this season ahead of the derby showdown against table-topping Arsenal on 1 October.

Whelan suggested it would be bad for the English top flight to lose a manager like Conte.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “You’d like to think that if he’s doing well at the football club and he’s got the players he wants – this is now his team.

“Tottenham have got to work really hard to try and sort a long-term contract out. We don’t want to lose managers like him from the Premier League.

“He’s built his side after getting players through the door – a lot of these players have come for him.

“Absolutely not – I can’t see him leaving.

“He’s the biggest signing they could make right now.”

Tottenham completed eight signings during the summer window.

Fraser Forster, Richarlison, Cristian Romero, Yves Bissouma, Destiny Udogie, Djed Spence, Ivan Perisic, and Clement Lenglet all joined Conte’s side.
