Rangers backed to beat Watford to Ferguson signing in ‘massive coup’
Noel Whelan has backed Rangers to pull off a “massive coup” by signing Lewis Ferguson from Aberdeen.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Dons striker suggested the Light Blues would be able to blow their rivals away for the 21-year-old.
As revealed by Football Insider, Ibrox chiefs are preparing a bid for Ferguson after he submitted a transfer request at Pittodrie.
The Dons confirmed they had rejected the midfielder’s request following an “insulting” bid from a Premier League side.
The Scottish Sun claim newly-promoted Watford had tabled a £2million offer for the Scotland under-21 international.
Whelan insisted Rangers were doing the right thing looking to sign exciting youngsters after their title-winning campaign.
Asked if he thought the Gers could blow their rivals away for Ferguson, Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Yeah, absolutely. Again, getting a player at a good age for the future. For Rangers, this is what they’re looking to build now.
“It’s all about longevity now for Rangers. Keeping what they’ve got and making it even stronger.
“Going into the transfer market to take, probably, one of the best young players in the Scottish Premiership would be a massive coup for Rangers.”
Ferguson joined Aberdeen from Hamilton back in the summer of 2018.
He has played 124 times for the Dons to date, with his 41 appearances this season yielding 10 goals and five assists.
He is the son of Derek Ferguson and nephew of Barry Ferguson, who both played over 100 times for Rangers.
