Rangers beat high-flying English club in forward race after hijacking move with lower offer – report
Rangers beat Bristol City in the race to sign Jamie Murphy, according to a report.
The Scottish Sun claims that the high-flying English Championship club offered Brighton £1.8million for Murphy, 28, but Rangers had hijacked that deal with a lower offer.
It is understood that Murphy’s love of the Gers is what saw him snub the chance to move to Bristol City and become the newest addition at Ibrox.
The former Motherwell and Sheffield United forward has joined Rangers on loan until the end of the season and will then join permanently for a fee widely reported to be £1million.
However it is now being reported that the Glasgow club had to hijack Bristol City’s offer to sign up Murphy as Brighton took the decision to accepted the Gers’ bid of less value in order for the player to earn a dream move.
Lee Johnson’s Robins side are currently fourth in the Championship and are solid contenders for their first ever promotion to the Premier League this season.
Football Insider verdict
Although Rangers are not of the standing in British football they once were, it will be nice for fans to see that they have been able to beat off an English club to sign someone just because of their stature. Murphy is a Rangers fan and for him it has been a great week for him to finally join his boyhood club. The chance to join Bristol City would have been a hard one to pass up on. Johnson’s side look good to challenge for promotion this season and Murphy knows all about doing that from achieving it with Brighton last term.
In other Rangers news, an £8.5million forward has alerted the Gers with a sensational wage offer.
