Rangers and Celtic face potential Youth Cup quarter-final clash – confirmed
Rangers and Celtic could meet in the quarter-final of the Scottish FA Youth Cup after being paired together in Tuesday’s Hampden draw, it has been confirmed.
The two sides met in the final of the competition last season with Celtic running out winners at the national stadium to secure a league and cup double.
The draw was announced by the Scottish FA on their official website.
Before the sides meet, Rangers still have to negotiate their way past St. Johnstone and secure their place in the last eight of Scotland’s main youth cup competition.
With regular head coach Graeme Murty in charge of the first-team on an interim basis, the Gers have been managed by Billy Kirkwood, Craig Mulholland and Peter Lovenkrands in recent weeks as they continue their ongoing ‘Academy Games’ programme.
Instead of competing in the SPFL’s Development League, Rangers have opted to take part in a season-long series of home and away friendlies with elite youth teams from across the UK and continental Europe.
Tommy McIntyre’s young Celtic were recently knocked out of the UEFA Youth League and are currently ninth in the Development League with a whopping eight games in hand on leaders Hibernian.
The two sides are scheduled to meet – assuming Rangers get past St. Johnstone – before January 28th.
