Rangers chief King aims more criticism at Celtic

By Harvey Byrne

Rangers chief Dave King has aimed more criticism in the direction of fierce rivals Celtic, stating that they have only won two titles in a row and not six.

It is a slightly bizarre statement to make from the Ibrox chairman given that the Hoops have in fact won six consecutive Premiership titles.

However, his point is that Celtic were only competing with Rangers for two of those six season and that the other four were “irrelevant” due to the Gers not being in the same league at time following their demotion in 2012.

“I was asked recently if I thought Celtic could get 10 in a row,” told King, as quoted by the Daily Record.

“My response is that Celtic have got two in a row at this point in time.

“So they need to win another eight to get to 10.

“Do I think there’s any chance of them getting another eight?

“I don’t think there’s any chance of them doing that before us winning another league title.

“Celtic have six titles but the concept of nine-in-a-row is a competition between Rangers and Celtic.

“So if Rangers went into the English Premier League and Celtic stayed behind in Scotland and won 20 league titles, there would be no point them saying to Rangers fans, ‘We’ve won 20 in a row.’

“It’s irrelevant if Rangers are not there. So it’s a challenge among ourselves.”

King’s latest comments follow on from his previously made statement that he believes Celtic should be further ahead of Rangers than what they currently are.

But, his words could also backfire and fill the Hoops with more motivation, as proved in the last campaign when Brendan Rodgers’ side ran away to a domestic treble following a war of the words with the Ibrox club.

Both Glasgow giants are however looking to strengthen their sides this summer with Celtic bringing in Jonny Hayes from Aberdeen, while Rangers have brought in as many as eight new faces and they will be hoping to claim the top two spots at the very least next season.

In other Rangers news, the Gers have been installed as favourites to sign this four-time Premier League winner.
